A dental crown is an artificial restoration that fits over the remaining part of a damaged tooth, strengthening it and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. A crown is sometimes known as a ‘cap’. They are used to improve the appearance of your teeth, and can also be placed on top of implants.

Why do I need a crown?

Crowns are an ideal way to repair teeth that have been broken or been weakened due to decay or a very large filling. A crown could also be used for if you have a discoloured filling and need to improve the appearance of your tooth, or if you have had a root filling and require a crown to protect the remainder of the tooth. It can also help to secure a bridge or denture in place.

What is a crown made of?

Most crowns are made from porcelain which is bonded to a precious metal base. It is possible to have crowns made entirely out of porcelain which can look much more natural, and are a popular choice for front teeth. However, they are not as strong as bonded crowns.

All-ceramic crowns are a modern technique that offers a metal-free alternative which can give the strength of a bonded crown with the appearance of a porcelain crown. All-ceramic crowns are suitable for use in all areas of the mouth.

Gold alloy crowns are also an option. Gold is one of the oldest dental filling materials. Today it is used in conjunction with other metal alloys to increase its strength and durability. These crowns are silver or gold in colour

How is the crown fitted?

When you and your dentist are happy with the fit and appearance of the new crown, it will be fixed in place with special dental cement or adhesive which will form a seal to hold the crown in place.

Will the crown be noticeable?

The crown will be made to match your other teeth as closely as possible. The shade of the surrounding teeth will be recorded, to make sure that the colour looks as close to natural as possible.
